Blair Atholl

Suggested days out from Glasgow and Edinburgh by train

Blair Castle, the ancient seats of the Dukes and Earls of Atholl, holds an important place in Scotland's history. Strategically located in the Strath of Garry, whoever held Blair Castle had control over the Grampian mountains and the route north to Inverness. It was twice besieged, by Cromwell's army in 1652 and again by the Jacobites in 1746. It has been much visited by royalty.

It’s a ten minute walk from Blair Atholl station on the Highland Line and is open daily during the summer, and has restricted opening during the winter months. As well as the magnificent castle, it features gardens, pony trekking, walking in the estate, and is a centre for equestrian events. And if you’re thirsty after your visit, call in at the Bothy Bar at the Atholl Hotel near the station for a pint of their locally-brewed Ale...

Journey time from Glasgow or Edinburgh is between 1 hour 50 minutes and 2 hours 15 minutes, depending on service. A change of trains at Stirling or Perth may be necessary.
